On October 18, 2023, Associated Press reported that that the law firm of Cooper & Kirk, well known for its advocacy of conservative causes, dropped its suit against the Virginia Beach School Board after the board reversed course on its refusal to implement Gov. Youngkin’s guidelines on transgender students.
In August, the board considered bur failed to adopt policies consistent with Youngkin’s transgender student guidelines. However, the board subsequently adopted policies it believes are consistent with the governor’s. Attorney Charles Cooper of Cooper & Kirk pointed out that the plaintiffs had voluntarily dismissed the suit, adding, “We applaud the Virginia Beach School Board for its action last week in adopting transgender policies that protect the rights of all parents and students,” Cooper added in a statement.
The school district’s spokesperson David Schleck noted the board’s vote was not related to any impending lawsuit involving the governor’s policies..
An August 26 blog post reported that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), along with Arlington County Public Schools and Alexandria City Public Schools, have decided not to adopt the Commonwealth of Virginia’s new policies that rollback protections for transgender students.
